Increase range by decreasing unsprung weight. Unspring weight is weight of a vehicle that isn't being carried by the suspension. Reducing unsprung weight results in improved acceleration, deceleration, and handling. The additional benefit for the EV application is extended range. The ULTRAdisc rotors (by Girodisc) for the Model S are a total of 22 pounds lighter than Tesla OEM rotors for a Model S P100D. This lone modification to our Model S P100D resulted in 8.4% less energy used*. In our real world application, this means more than 20 miles of additional range! 

 

Some hyper-performance cars, such as the Ford GT, go to the extreme by offering carbon fiber wheels as an OEM option to reduce unsprung weight in pursuit of maximum performance. Additionally, SAE International (Society of Automotive Engineers) recognizes that more mileage can be realized with a lighter wheel than a heavier wheel. According to our strategic partner, Rays Engineering, reducing 2.2 lbs of unsprung weight is equivalent to reducing 33 lbs of overall vehicle weight. This means that installing the front and rear ULTRAdiscs is the same as removing 330 lbs from your Tesla Model S or Model X!

*Note: testing was conducted over the course of 1,700 miles of highway and street driving. During testing, regenerative braking was not used. This test was conducted first with OE brake rotors then with our high performance 2-piece rotors. More details on our blog here.
